INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:

Rocketown hosts interns 3 times during the year- fall semester (late August-December), spring semester (mid January- April), and in the summer (mid May-August). Each semester Rocketown hosts approximately 8 interns. All interns must be in college and seeking college credit. If they are not seeking college credit- they cannot intern at Rocketown. We created this rule to be consistent and to ensure that all candidates would be fully committed to the internship.

Rocketown accepts interns in the following areas:

  • Booking
  • Sound
  • Engineering
  • Public Relations
  • Marketing
  • Youth Ministry
  • Accounting
  • Event Planning
  • Non-Profit Management

Each intern is expected to serve 10 hours a week at Rocketown.  The breakdown for these hours is below:

  • 4 hours each week in the office. Each intern will report to the employee most closely related to their field. For example, if an intern was a public relations major, this intern would spend office time with the Development Director.
  • 5 hours in the music venue. At shows, interns are expected to help with wrist-banding at the register, selling water, and cleaning up after the show. The purpose is for the interns to get a well-rounded understanding of what happens at Rocketown, and to ensure that they are able to meet the kids and understand the mission of Rocketown.
  • 1 hour each week is spent in the intern meeting. The interns will meet with the Entertainment Manger each week. At these meetings, the interns and the Entertainment Manager spend time planning the interns’ individual projects and the intern group project.

THE INTERN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT:

Each intern must complete an individual project. The project should benefit Rocketown in some way, and should relate to the intern’s major. Individual Projects in the past have included:

  • Developing a photography class
  • Developing the Rocketown online auction
  • Planning a concert
  • Recording live sound
  • Creating a screen printing lab

THE INTERN GROUP PROJECT:

Each semester the interns are expected to book a benefit show for the charity of their choice. They are responsible for finding bands that will be willing to play (bands can not have played at Rocketown within 30 days of the event). They are also responsible for creating the promotional materials, for promoting and marketing the event, and for choosing the charity and making sure they are represented on the night of the event. The group should work as a team, focusing on each intern’s strengths. The purpose of the exercise it to teach the interns how to work together as a group, and to teach the interns how difficult putting together an event really is! At the end of the group project interns are asked to evaluate their peers.  The Entertainment Manager will play a hands-off role in the group project. The goal is for the interns to learn by a trial and error.

THE INTERN NOTEBOOK:

Interns are expected to keep a notebook to use as an opportunity to journal their time at Rocketown. The purpose of the notebook is to provide a way to keep up with each intern’s time, evaluate each intern, keep a detailed portfolio of interns’ work at Rocketown, and the concerts they attend. Each intern is expected to get weekly sign-offs for their intern meeting, office time, and music venue hours. Each intern should keep copies of EVERYTHING that they work on, as well as a flier from every concert they work or attend.
